Shelf Life & Storage
Shelf Life & Storage
MRE Star meals provide a 36-month shelf life when stored at or below 80°F (27°C), based on manufacturer guidance. Like all MREs, shelf life is directly affected by storage temperature: the higher the temperature, the shorter the life; the cooler the temperature, the longer the meals will remain within quality specifications.
As a general rule for ready-to-eat meal storage, a reduction of approximately 10°F in storage temperature can significantly extend shelf life. For example, meals stored around 60°F typically maintain quality for substantially longer than 3 years, while storage in temperatures consistently above 90°F will shorten usable life.
For best results:
- Store cases in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight
- Avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures above 100°F (38°C)
- Keep meals off concrete floors and away from chemicals or strong odors
- Incorporate MREs into your emergency supply review and rotation cycle
Each case is marked with a 5-digit Julian date code to help track production date and support inventory rotation. Packaging meets military specifications to ensure durability and long-term storage stability.
