5 Ways to Prepare for Continued Civil Unrest
More PreparedShare
Economic uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic coupled with rioting and looting has turned 2020 into one of the most tumultuous years in our history. Here are five steps to immediately ensure that you and your family stay as safe and as prepared as possible during these challenging times we’re all experiencing. Here at More Prepared, we’ve been advocates of getting and staying prepared for natural disasters and other emergencies for 15 years. This includes yourself, your family, your coworkers - in your homes, workplaces, and vehicles. While we mainly focus on preparing for and weathering the storm when it comes to natural disasters, the reality of 2020 and perhaps the year(s) beyond is that civil unrest is a probability due to circumstance. If things get worse and civil unrest seems unnecessary - the two most likely scenarios will be either sheltering in place or evacuating for a safer location. Here are five ways to protect yourself and your family in the event of either.
Home Sweet Home
If you can, stay sheltered in place at home as much as possible. Talk with your neighbors as much as possible and be sure to have enough food, water, and supplies to last at home for at least a month. Stock up on flashlights and lanterns should the lights go out. Consider purchasing a generator if possible. Nothing is more important than the safety of your family. If you have to evacuate, don’t hesitate to do so.
Stay Informed
Stay up to date with the latest news, especially local news. Following social media or national news all day can be daunting, so limit yourself for your own mental health. Be sure to check on road conditions often, should you need to get up and go quickly. Follow your state and local officials, police departments on social media because they will provide valuable information.
Develop Survival Skills
Being forced to evacuate your home, especially with children, can be scary. But knowing that you have the skills to survive can be reassuring. Know how to pitch a tent, build a fire without matches, as well as hike, or walk safely for miles in your local terrain. Know what kind of dangers your local environment and its wildlife could present to you and how to protect yourself.
Prep Your Bug Out Bag Immediately
Make sure that all of the essential items of your survival kit fit in your bug out bag. It’s a good idea to have this bag available for a grab-and-go scenario. In the times of COVID-19, it’s essential that you include extra masks, rubber gloves, and sanitation products. Scroll through our blog for helpful resources on how to build your bug out bag as well as tips on surviving outside of the home.
Don’t Panic
It’s much easier said than done, but don’t panic. Rest assured that you’ve done everything in your power to maximize your chances. Remember, tough times don’t last - tough people do.
