Overview & Best Uses

The Stingray™ Self-Rising Water Dam is a reusable flood barrier designed to rise automatically as oncoming water enters its internal pocket chambers. It does not require inflation or pre-filling with water, making it a practical solution when rapid deployment and long runs of flood protection are required.

Before flooding begins, the flexible barrier is unfolded across the desired path and its front opening is propped up to receive water. As floodwater flows into the chambers, water pressure opens the barrier into a V-shape and provides the ballast needed to hold it in position.

A weighted front strip, reinforced internal partitions, embedded flotation section and non-slip underside work together to improve stability. The flexible PVC construction allows Stingray to conform to different surfaces and changes in terrain.

Individual sections connect using industrial-strength hook-and-loop closures, allowing multiple units to form longer flood walls or protective perimeters. Optional corner units can be used to create turns around buildings, infrastructure and other protected areas.

Stingray is available in 20", 30" and 48" protection heights. After the water recedes, the barrier collapses and can be cleaned, dried, rolled and stored for future use.

Setup & Installation

BEFORE DEPLOYMENT

  1. Inspect the site and determine the anticipated direction of water flow.
  2. Measure the required protection length and identify any corners, slopes or changes in terrain.
  3. Remove sharp objects, debris and other materials that could damage the barrier.
  4. Confirm that water will approach the open pocket side of the barrier.
  5. Inspect the barrier, connections, weighted strip and staking points before installation.

INSTALLATION

  1. Move the rolled Stingray barrier to the deployment area.
  2. Unroll and unfold the barrier along the desired flood-control path.
  3. Position the pocket openings toward the anticipated water flow.
  4. Straighten the weighted front strip and ensure that the non-slip bottom is in contact with the ground.
  5. Prop the front opening slightly with sandbags or the integrated straps so incoming water can enter the pocket chambers.
  6. Use the rear flap grommets to stake the barrier where the surface and site conditions allow.
  7. Connect additional sections using the integrated industrial-strength hook-and-loop closures.
  8. Install compatible corner units where the barrier must turn around a structure or protected area.
  9. Confirm that all connections overlap correctly and that there are no gaps in the protection line.
  10. Monitor the system as water approaches and enters the barrier.

As water enters the pocket chambers, the Stingray barrier opens into a V-shape. The captured water creates ballast while the weighted strip, partitions, flotation section and non-slip underside help keep the barrier positioned.

AFTER USE

  1. Allow floodwater to recede and drain from the barrier.
  2. Remove stakes, sandbags and other positioning materials.
  3. Disconnect individual sections carefully.
  4. Clean mud, debris and contaminants from the barrier.
  5. Allow every section to dry completely.
  6. Inspect the material, seams and connections for damage.
  7. Roll the barrier and store it in a clean, dry location.

Always follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions and evaluate surface conditions, expected water depth, flow velocity and debris exposure before deployment.

FAQ

HOW DOES THE STINGRAY WATER DAM RISE?

The front opening is positioned toward the anticipated water flow and propped slightly open before deployment. As floodwater enters the pocket chambers, water pressure opens the barrier into a V-shape. The captured water then provides ballast that helps stabilize the barrier.

DOES STINGRAY NEED TO BE INFLATED?

No. Stingray does not require an air pump or inflation.

DO I HAVE TO FILL IT WITH WATER BEFOREHAND?

No. The barrier uses the approaching floodwater to fill and raise itself. The pocket opening must be positioned correctly so the water can enter.

IS ANY SETUP REQUIRED BEFORE THE WATER ARRIVES?

Yes. Stingray must be unfolded, oriented toward the anticipated water flow and positioned before flooding reaches the site. The front opening should be propped up with sandbags or the integrated straps so it can receive water.

WHAT PROTECTION HEIGHTS ARE AVAILABLE?

Stingray is available in 20", 30" and 48" protection heights.

WHAT LENGTHS ARE AVAILABLE?

Standard 15-foot and 30-foot sections are available for select protection heights. The available combinations include 20"H × 15'L, 20"H × 30'L, 30"H × 15'L, 30"H × 30'L and 48"H × 15'L.

CAN MULTIPLE SECTIONS BE CONNECTED?

Yes. Individual sections connect using industrial-strength hook-and-loop closures, allowing longer protection runs to be assembled.

CAN STINGRAY TURN CORNERS?

Compatible outward corner units are available for select heights. These components allow the system to turn around buildings, equipment and other protected areas.

DOES THE BARRIER NEED TO BE STAKED DOWN?

The rear flap includes grommet holes for staking where appropriate. Whether staking is required depends on the surface, layout, expected water conditions and installation plan.

CAN IT BE USED ON UNEVEN GROUND?

The flexible construction allows Stingray to conform to various surfaces and changes in terrain. Sharp objects, large gaps and severe irregularities should be addressed before deployment.

IS STINGRAY REUSABLE?

Yes. After use, drain, clean and completely dry the barrier. Inspect the material, seams and connectors before rolling it for storage.

WILL IT WORK IF WATER APPROACHES FROM THE WRONG DIRECTION?

No. The barrier must be oriented so the approaching water enters the open pocket side. Incorrect orientation can prevent proper deployment.

CAN VEHICLES DRIVE OVER IT?

Stingray should not be treated as a vehicle crossing unless the manufacturer has provided a specific crossing procedure for the installation. Protect the deployed barrier from traffic, sharp objects and damaging equipment.

WILL IT STOP ALL WATER INTRUSION?

Performance depends on correct positioning, suitable surface conditions, water direction, protection height and the quality of the connections between sections. A dewatering pump can provide secondary protection for incidental seepage or water that accumulates on the protected side.

FLOODWATER PROVIDES THE BALLAST

Stingray differs from inflatable and water-filled flood tubes because it does not need to be inflated or filled before use. Instead, the approaching floodwater enters the open pocket chambers and causes the barrier to rise.

As the chambers fill, the captured water creates the weight needed to hold the system in position. The weighted front strip, reinforced partitions, flotation section and non-slip underside provide additional support during deployment.

DEPLOY IT BEFORE FLOODING BEGINS

Although Stingray rises automatically, it must be properly positioned before water reaches the protection area. The barrier should be unfolded along the planned protection line with its openings facing the anticipated water flow.

The front opening must be propped slightly open using sandbags or the integrated straps. This allows the initial water flow to enter the pocket chambers and begin raising the barrier.

CONNECT SECTIONS FOR LONGER RUNS

Individual Stingray sections connect using industrial-strength hook-and-loop closures. Multiple sections can be joined to protect longer distances, while compatible corner units can create turns around structures and equipment.

When planning a system, account for:

• Total protection length
• Required protection height
• Direction of water flow
• Corners and changes in direction
• Changes in surface elevation
• Section connections and overlap
• Available staking locations
• Access needed during and after deployment

SELECTING A PROTECTION HEIGHT

Choose a barrier height based on the anticipated water depth, site conditions and appropriate safety margin. The available protection heights are:

• 20 inches
• 30 inches
• 48 inches

Do not select a barrier based only on historic water levels. Consider drainage limitations, nearby waterways, changing weather conditions and the possibility that actual flood levels may exceed previous events.

SECONDARY WATER REMOVAL

Incidental seepage or rainfall may still collect on the protected side of a flood barrier. A dewatering pump can be used as a secondary measure to remove accumulated water from flat surfaces and low points.

Always prepare the deployment plan in advance, train the responsible personnel and conduct a practice installation before the system is needed during an emergency.
